pea protein power

Theoretically, we can consume enough protein foods using a superfood rich diet, but real life has a tendency to get in the way and it is difficult to prepare protein rich meals on some days. Protein powder shakes are a time efficient and concentrated way to get the best essential amino acid profile and ratios; often a better and more complete profile than available in our  meal choices for protein.  For those with routine yoga or heavy workout schedules, it is good to know that there is a 30 minute window of opportunity immediately after a workout when the body absorbs protein most efficiently and although that is not a good time for full meal, it is a great time for a protein shake.

For a number of years, soy and whey protein powders have been readily available, but each has demonstrated some limitations. Soy is highly genetically engineered particularly in the US and many brands available in Canada originate from US manufacturers and suppliers. Whey protein intake is linked to glutathione production and has demonstrated an ability to heal and repair an irritated intestinal lining; however, unless you are body building, it is possible to experience significant weight gain in some individuals. Whey powder was often used to increase market weight on pigs ready for slaughter after all. So, although ideal for convalescing individuals, it may deserve a cautionary note for some individuals. Rice protein was introduce as an alternative for very sensitive individuals due to its low allergenic nature and it is still a good source of protein particularly when mixed with pea protein powder.

Many formulators and manufacturers, who provide supplements for health professionals, have been using Pea protein powder for a number of years. Pea protein powder is among the most hypoallergenic of all protein powders, and of course, it contains no gluten or dairy. It’s also easy to digest, does not cause bloating, a common side effect of many other protein powders and it has the ability to lower levels of the hunger hormone ‘ghrelin.’ Ghrelin is secreted by the stomach when it is empty in order to trigger a hunger response in the brain and pea protein produces a great number of peptides that delay the emptying of the stomach and the secretion of ghrelin. Increasing protein intake and reducing carbohydrate intake, is important to everyone trying to lose a few extra pounds.  In fact, pea protein will help you feel full for longer!

Additionally pea protein supports heart health, reduces the risk of kidney disease, regulates blood sugar and prevents muscle wasting particularly in the aging person. Companies like Thorne Research and Biotics Research and many more that supply naturopathic doctors, medical doctors, and nutrition counselors, emphasize the importance of using pea protein powders in order to reduce adverse reactions in sensitive individuals and experience the most benefit from a protein powder. Pick up a sample of Vanilla or Chocolate flavored pea and rice protein powder and enjoy the taste as well as the benefit.
